The guaianolide dehydrocostus lactone (1) is a member of the sesquiterpene family and possesses a broad and interesting biological activity. Besides its anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, and anticancer activity, it is found to be a potent pesticide. In our ongoing studies, the functionalized hydroazulene 2 is provided by a highly diastereoselective aldol reaction of chiral ester 4 with aldehyde 3 followed by a domino ring closing metathesis as the key step.
