A series of quinone-based molecules were used as organic building blocks for coordination polymers (CPs) and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). We synthesized a novel ligand 1,4-dicyano-2,3,5,6-tetrahydroxybenzene, and the resulting redox-active one-dimensional CP and three-dimensional porous MOF were used as electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries. In addition, a MOF was built from quinone-cored bis(triazole) ligand and Cu(II). The interior surfaces of pores are covered by the polar carbonyl groups of ligands, which provide strong interactions with guest molecules. This material exhibits the ability to capture CO<sub>2</sub> but negligible N<sub>2</sub> adsorption at 298K, which is very promising for the applications on gas separation.
