Organic photocatalysis enjoyed a rapid progress during the last two decades, wherein most photosensitizers are based on expensive molecular complexes (i.e., Ru and Ir polypyridyl complexes). In contrast, solid-state semiconductors have received much less attention in photocatalytic organic transformations. Our group is devoted to developing low-cost semiconductor systems to drive organic oxidation reactions with a particular emphasis on integrating H<sub>2</sub> evolution as the accompanied reduction reaction, maximizing the utilization of excited holes and electrons. In this presentation, the synthesis and characterization of several two-dimensional semiconductor-based photocatalytic systems will be introduced. A variety of organic transformations including alcohol oxidation, C-C coupling, as well as the upgrading of biomass-derived intermediate compounds will be realized on those semiconductor systems with appropriate cocatalysts.
