Solid oxide direct carbon fuel cell (SO-DCFC) is a high efficiency approach for clean coal conversion. In order to explore the relationship of SO-DCFC performance and coal properties, the reaction process of coal in anode zone of SO-DCFC were studied by using three coals (Taixi anthracite coal, Dahuangshan bituminous coal and Huolinhe lignite respective) from Northwest China at 850 oC. The results show that the performance of SO-DCFC was closely related to the characteristics of coal and their pyrolysis products. The combustible gases from coal pyrolysis, such as H2, CO, and small molecular alkanes, have a great contribution for improving the SO-DCFC performance, and the high reactivity of semi-coke is also beneficial to enhance the cell performance. The minerals in coal have some complex effect on the cell performance. The reactions of coal in the anode zone of SO-DCFC can be divided into three categories, which are pyrolysis reaction, reverse Boudouard reaction, and electrochemical oxidation reaction of gases and semi-coke respectively.
