Substantial scientific progress in nanoscale electronics, photovoltaics and biosensors incorporating novel hybrid materials has heightened the demand for scientists to develop processes that can control noncovalent molecular ordering over large scales on layered 2D materials.To achieve noncovalent functionalization of 2D materials with lying-down phases of amphiphiles, traditional monolayer assembly techniques such as drop casting or Langmuir-Schaefer deposition are often employed. While experimentally convenient for assembly over small areas, significant challenges arise in controlling solvent drying and other processes that can lead to domain heterogeneity over larger areas. Previously, we demonstrated using a temperature-controlled heating stage that in situ thermal control during Langmuir-Schaefer conversion routinely transfers domains with edge lengths &gt;10 microns. Drawing inspiration from roll-to-roll processing techniques used in the fabrication of solar cells, we designed and fabricated a heated roller apparatus, addressing the limited throughput that is one of the barriers preventing Langmuir-Schaefer transfer from being leveraged industrially. Using this protocol, we found that the heated roller transfer stage can facilitate the assembly of large molecular domains on HOPG with film lengths exceeding 6.0-in, in times as short as a few minutes.
