Recent developments in the field of novel materials with different functionalities have encouraged the scientific community to develop multifunctional nanomaterial as they are expected to reduce human work load by their efficiency, reliability, cost-efficiency and scalability. Designing nanophosphors with desired optical properties for multifunctional solid-state lighting, scintillators and optical thermometry will be a highly welcoming step in advanced photonics, X-ray photodynamic therapy and thermal sensors. In this talk, I will focus on the progress we have made on the synthesis and optoelectronic properties of pyrochlore AIII2MIV2O7 nanoparticles in recent years. We have achieved substantial tunability of their particle size, crystal phase, and more importantly, luminescence properties. We have gained clear understanding of the influences of the synthesis conditions, particle morphology and composition on their photoluminescence and radioluminescence. Overall, our pyrochlore A2M2O7 nanoparticles have demonstrated multifunctional application potentials as UV, X-ray and thermographic phosphors. In sum, these exemplary functional metal oxide nanomaterials offer bright promise of producing innovative advances across multiple technologies, and thus will continue impacting our lives in substantial ways.
