Previous studies suggest that the mechanism of Fischer-Tropsch (FT) reactions may be through the modified Alkylidene pathway. Based on this mechanism, the monomer of the polymerization-like reaction is MCH, and the growing chain is RCH=M. The formation of C-C bond is through the reaction of MCH and RCH=M, producing a new growing chain RCH2CH=M with increasing one more carbon. During the process of C-C bond formation, the sp2 carbon in RCH=M is changed to sp3 in newly formed growing chain RCH2CH=M, which could results in an inverse isotope effect. The rate of reaction of RCD=M with MCH/MCD will be fast than that of RCH=M with MCH. Therefore, in each step of the C-C bond formation, this mechanism also predicts that deuterium will be enriched due to the inverse isotope effect during the C-C bond formation in the competitive experiment by using a mixture of H2/D2 (1:1). This phenomena was observed in Co catalyzed FT reactions. In this study, the inverse isotope effects and the deuterium enrichments in hydrocarbons in Fe and Ru catalyzed FT reactions are observed and the deuterium enrichment is discussed.
