Here we report the synthesis of monodisperse ZnS nanocrystals whose size (1.5 – 4.0 nm in diameter) is controlled by precursor conversion kinetics. We employ substituted diphenylphosphio-N-phenylthioformamides as novel nanocrystal precursors, as well as substituted thioureas. We demonstrate how the surfactant and solvent choice impacts the dispersity, ripening kinetics and purity of the nanocrystal product. A sizing formula is empirically determined using UV/vis absorbance, SAXS, TEM and PDF analysis. We establish how this synthetic knowledge can be used to further develop ZnS heterostructures and shelling procedures.
