Intercalation is the reversible insertion of an atom, ion, or molecule into a layered material. I will present an innovative series of wet chemical strategies to intercalate zero-valent atoms into 2D layered materials. Species include heavy metals, semiconductors, and semimetals (Ag, Au, Bi, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Ge, In, Mn, Mo, Ni, Os, Pb, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Sb, Sn, and W). The zero-valent nature of the intercalant allows super-stoichiometric intercalation. It can be used to achieve alloys, metal-semiconductor heterostructures, and semiconductor-semiconductor heterostructures. These new chemistries are reversible, performed at low-temperatures, and non-destructive to the host material. Atomic intercalation is general and works for chalcogenides, oxides, and graphitic materials. Intercalation gives access to a host of new unique physical properties including new phase behavior, superlattices, altered mechanical properties, altered ionic storage, and chemically tunable transparency and color.<br/>
