2,5-Furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) has received increasing attention as a near-market platform chemical that can potentially replace terephthalic acid in the production of commercial and high-performance polymers such as polyethylene terephthalate. FDCA can be obtained from the oxidation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), which is produced from the dehydration of C-6 monosaccharides obtained from cellulosic biomass. In this presentation, we will present the results obtained from our recent effort in developing homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysts for efficient electrochemical oxidation of HMF to FDCA. For the identification of optimal homogeneous catalysts for electrochemical FDCA production, we comparatively studied the catalytic properties, stabilities, and regeneration pathways of 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) and 4-acetamido-TEMPO at various pH and temperature conditions. Although TEMPO derivatives have been used for various homogeneous oxidation reactions with chemical oxidants, published studies on their use for mediated electrochemical alcohol oxidation reactions are limited.  Therefore, our results will be useful for designing and understanding TEMPO-based radical-mediated electrochemical oxidations of other alcohols and aldehydes. For the development of heterogeneous catalysts, we systematically compared the intrinsic catalytic activity of NiOOH, CoOOH, and FeOOH electrodes produced with comparable numbers of metal sites. Since MOOH (M = Ni, Co, and Fe) have often been investigated and compared as water oxidation catalysts, this presentation will provide interesting new insights into the mechanistic differences between alcohol oxidation and water oxidation when using MOOH electrodes. <br/>
