In this presentation, Professor Dionysiou will give insights on the synthesis of non-metal doped TiO2, Bi2WO6, and metal-ferrite composite catalysts and their photocatalytic performance for the destruction of contaminants of emerging concern in water. Methods of development of tailor-designed mesoporous NB-codoped TiO2, Bi2WO6, and ZnCu-Fe2O4 will be discussed. Photocatalytic destruction of different categories of water contaminants such as pharmaceuticals and personal care products (i.e., PPCP), pesticides, herbicides, cyanotoxins, and industrial chemicals will be presented. Oxidative degradation pathways and mechanism of pollutant removal by different photocatalytic systems will be shown. Results from the photocatalytic removal of atrazine, a widely used herbicide, by ZnCu-Fe2O4 in presence of sodium sulfite as green precursor for sulfate radical will be discussed. Degradation kinetics and the formation of reaction byproducts due to hydroxyl and sulfate radical attack to the target contaminants will be illustrated. Detailed degradation pathways of specific pollutants will be elucidated. Analysis will be discussed on the photocatalytic mechanism in the case of UV, solar light and visible light driven processes. The influence of water parameters such as pH, alkalinity, and presence of inorganic species will be discussed with respect to the chemistry of the contaminants of interest and the role of the catalyst-solution interaction.
