An important strategy in the development of an integrated biorefinery is the transformation of lignin to platform aromatic molecules. The ability to design highly selective and robust catalysts for reductive depolymerization and hydrodeoxygenation is key to creating value-added bio-based products sustainably. The ability to use <i>operando</i> NMR spectroscopy of selectively isotopically-labeled model compounds to monitor reactions at elevated temperatures and pressures reveals how the choices of metal (e.g., Ni, Cu, Pd nanoparticles), support (acidic or basic oxides), and solvent (polar or non-polar), affect the absolute and relative rates of the individual steps in these complex reaction networks. This talk will illustrate how the catalyst-solvent combination has dramatic consequences for the outcome of reactions.
