During the past two decades, a lot of work has focused on the design and construction of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) due to the intriguing diversity of their architectures and their potential applications in gas storage, magnetism, luminescence and proton conduction. However, the rational design and synthesis of new topological MOFs is also a formidable task owing to the variable coordination numbers and flexible coordination environments of metal ions. To date, the widely used ligands for the construction of MOFs are rigid multicarboxylic acids, owing to their rich coordination modes and high affinity for metal ions. Among them, aromatic multicarboxylic acids such as 1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid, 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylic acid and 4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid (H2BPDC) have been extensively studied. However, the synthesis of new topological MOFs by using substituted aromatic multicarboxylic acids is less developed. Herein we report the syntheses and characterization of a series of novel MOFs with 2,2' (or 3,3')-disubstituted BPDC. Structural analysis reveals that some MOFs materials have different kinds of topologies like sra, pcu, dia, bnn, hex, binodal (3,8)- or novel (3,20)-connected 3D network, etc (Fig. 1). Their crystal structures, gas adsorption, luminescence and magnetic properties have been systematically investigated.
