Polyolefin based lubricants are used in a variety of applications including engine oils, transformer fluids, and fillers in wire and cable applications. The bulk of these oils are made from mineral oil due to the low cost and enormous volumes. Affordable oils with improved firepoint and improved viscoelastic properties would enable a step-change improvement in a number of lubricant applications. A novel route to affordable lubricants will be presented on the oligomerization of ethylene (exclusively) using bis-biphenyl-phenol based catalysts to make branched polyolefins using a continuously stirred tank reactor (CSTR). Mechanistic aspects of the oil formation and properties of the oils will be discussed.
