Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of 3D crystalline mesoporous materials constructed by interconnecting metal cluster nodes with multi-dentate organic linkers, which have great potential for catalysis purposes. Due to their adjustable pores sizes and topologies, MOFs have been widely utilized as catalytic templates, where the nanopores restrict the sizes of nanoparticle catalysts and improve their intrinsic stability due to the confined environment. Traditionally, noble metal nanoparticles are commonly loaded as the catalytic active sites via a solution-based method. In this work, a gas-phase infiltration method is applied to form transition metal oxide clusters inside the MOFs. Different from the solution phase method, the gas phase precursors penetrate into and chemically bonded to the inner surface of MOFs. The fabricated hybrid MOFs demonstrates superior CO<sub>2</sub> reduction reactivity, in terms of selectivity close to 100% from -1.7 to -1.8 V vs. SHE, onset potential reduced for 200 mV over the solution method synthesized catalysts. This catalytic improvement is attributed to better interactions between the MOFs and the gas phase formed clusters. This gas phase infiltration method is expected to have great potentials to modify MOFs for various applications including catalysis, separation and sensing.
