Understanding the inter-play of local events and global environmental processes is a frustratingly elusive but critically important goal, as it is fundamental to creating a deeper and more accurate understanding of these processes, and for ensuring that environmental legislation at global and local levels is made on an appropriately informed basis. In-situ sensor measurements have the potential to significantly reduce the gap between partially validated information derived from remote sensing and quantitative data needed to contribute to issues in water quality that local and national agencies are trying to address. However, the complexity and high cost of in-situ chemical and biological sensing platforms continues to restrict deployments to a relatively small number of widely separated autonomous devices, and manual grab sampling combined with centralized instrumentation is still extensively employed. Here we report on the development of cost-effective sensing platforms for the in-situ analysis of nutrients in fresh and marine waters and report on how coupling these in-situ sensing platforms with satellite remote sensing will, in many instances, reduce the density requirement on in-situ sensors for tracking and modelling water chemistry dynamics.<br/>
