Our group has developed a series of reactions of aromatic and heteroaromatic compounds catalyzed by transition-metal complexes, ranging from substitutions with heteroatom and enolate nucleophiles to functionalization of aromatic C-H bonds with main group borane and silane reagents. We have used this work as a foundation for the discovery of related catalytic substitution and functionalization of C-H bonds in aliphatic substrates, in some cases with selectivity created by embedding the catalyst into a protein host. In all cases, we have conducted careful, quantitative mechanistic studies. This seminar will include results from these projects with a focus on the fundamental chemistry that underlies the novel reactivity.
