Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes have received considerable attention owing to the high redox potential of sulfate radicals. Sulfite is a waste product which results from the flue-gas desulfurization process. Compared to persulfate and peroxymonosulfate, sulfite has been recently proven to be an eco-friendly source of sulfate and hydroxyl radicals in the photocatalytic processes. Therefore, the photocatalyst FeIII Impregnated N-doped TiO2 was applied in this study for diphenamid degradation via sulfite activation under Visible LED irradiation (Vis LED). Our results showed that sulfite activation can be achieved under Vis LED by sole N-doped TiO2 and the activation was further improved using FeIII Impregnated N-doped TiO2 (FeN-TiO2) with a negligible metal leaching. The FeN-TiO2/sulfite/Vis LED process was investigated for degradation of diphenamid under various reaction conditions. Furthermore, sulfite decomposition was examined after the complete degradation of diphenamid. In addition, the mechanism of sulfite activation was clarified in detail in the proposed process. More than 50% of diphenamid and its generated intermediates was mineralized. In general, the FeN-TiO2/sulfite/Vis LED process could be an environmentally benign treatment technology for abatement of diphenamid in the environment.
