Stable photocatalyst with high performance for hydrogen evolution under visible light is important in the field of renewable energy. Herein, the hybrid composites of CdS/g-C3N4 with a tunable density of CdS are made through an in situ photochemical deposition of CdS nanodots onto g-C3N4 nanosheets. The resulting material under visible light was much more active than CdS and g-C3N4, not only for the photocatalytic evolution of H2 in presence of lactic acid, but also for the photoelectrochemical oxidation of water. Sample CS-4 has the highest hydrogen evolution performance and has an extremely long stability. The enhanced activity and stability is attributed to precise regulation of the position of CdS on the g-C3N4 surface and formation of a type II heterojunction, increasing visible light absorption, favoring band overlapping, and promoting the charge separation for interfacial reactions. This study opens a new avenue for an in situ engineering of photocatalysts to produce rich and active heterointerfaces for H2 and O2 evolution.
