Aldol reaction is well known to form carbon-carbon bond to aldehyde or ketone. This reaction is paid attention to many researchers because it has the great potential for producing valuable compounds through forming new carbon bond. Typically, aldol reaction is occurred by using either acid or base catalyst and each catalyst proceed to different reaction pathway. For this reason, aldol reaction can be classified two reactions such as addition reaction and condensation reaction.<br/>There is not too much report on the aldol addition reactions compared to that of aldol condensation reaction. The products chemical from aldol addition reaction is often intermediate chemicals on aldol condensation. It should be noted that the product yield on aldol addition reactions is low and reaction is difficult to control.<br/>In this study, we carried out aldol addition reaction of acetaldehyde by using homogeneous catalysts to produce 3-hydroxybutanal. It was confirmed that base catalyst is more advantageous than acid catalyst to obtain intermediate product by suppressing dehydration reaction. This reaction experiments were systemically carried out using various base catalysts. We observed the correlation between experimental variables and yield and conversion. Scheme 1 represents reaction pathway which was observed in our reaction results. In this presentation, we will discuss relationships between the experimental variables and 3-hydroxybutanal yield and reaction results using heterogeneous base catalysts for practical industrial applications
