Liquid Biopsy – an approach where circulating biomarkers and cells are used to gather information regarding the molecular level properties of a tumor – is a promising strategy for non-invasive cancer monitoring (Poudineh et al, Nature Biomedical Engineering, 2018). The analysis of circulating nucleic acids is a powerful means to define the mutational profile of tumors in patients, and the analysis of circulating tumor cells provides the opportunity to gather phenotypic information about the response of a tumor to therapy. This presentation will highlight how electrodeposited metals can be used to create high performance sensors that can be applied to the analysis of circulating tumor DNA (Das et al, J. Am. Chem. Soc.(2016), Das et al Angew. Chem. Intl. Ed.(2018)) and RNA (Das et al, Nature Chemistry(2015) for the realization of liquid biopsy as an alternative to invasive methods.
