Colloidal nanocrystals quantum dots have long been known to join together by oriented attachment to form larger coupled arrays of artificial atoms. This talk will present recent studies in which the trajectories of these processes are mapped. The goal is to use transmission electron microscopes to identify pathways that lead to functional electronic materials. Such pathways need to be resilient to detect, forming at the interface between two adjoining crystallites. A way of classifying the joining events will be presented as well as electronic structures calculations that further inform the study of crystal joining pathways.
