The Division of Carbohydrate Chemistry (Sugar Chemistry and Technology) of the American Chemical Society (ACS) was founded in 1919 and one of the founding members was Dr. Charles E. Coates.  Dr. Coates was also one of the early directors of the Audubon Sugar School (now Institute) of Louisiana State University, a position that I took up in June 2018.  Thus, not only is it a great privilege for me to meet in San Diego with other past Chairs of the Carbohydrate Chemistry Division it is also a real honor to be able to carry on the tradition of the Audubon Sugar Institute’s connection with this important Division.  The Division in recent years has morphed into a bastion of glycoscience but we should remember our historical roots of basic and applied sugar chemistry that have and still continue to underpin numerous commercial industries including the global sugar and related industries.  It will be a pleasure to discuss this topic in San Diego and share some of my insights.<br/>
