Numerous components are functionalized by metallic coating to ensure protection against corrosion and to give abrasion resistance to the surface. Many applications require coatings which cannot be established by today’s technologies in an ecological worthwhile compatibility. Therefore, the change from an aqueous solution (with its environmental disadvantages) to ionic liquids (ILs) is a promising pathway due to their high electrochemical stability. In this regard, ILs also exhibit many other beneficial properties like the tunable polarity, the thermal stability and the low toxicity. Refractory metals (Ti, V, Nb, Ta, Cr, Mo, W) possess very high melting points (&gt;1770 °C), a high resistance to corrosion and a beneficial biocompatibility, which makes them interesting for high temperature applications and medical implants. These metals are currently electrochemically deposited from their halides. This results in the formation of subhalides and their inclusion in the metal layers leading to their degradation. A promising approach is the use of metalorganic complexes of these metals (M) of the general formula [Mn(NCR)x][A]y with solvents (RCN) as ligands and weakly coordinating anions (A). Recent results show a good accessible synthesis route and a good solubility of the corresponding compounds with V, Cr, Mo and W in various ILs bearing bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide as anion (TFSI) and different functionalized cations (Figure 1). The complexes also exhibit a longterm stability in these ILs. A better solubility is achieved, when the compound possesses the same anion as the IL. Furthermore, we focus on the synthesis of tailor-made precursors and their synthetic optimizing regarding a better understanding of an interaction with ILs.
