Interfaces between metals and metal oxides are highly active for activation and conversion of CO2, whereas they are just accessible at the perimeter of metal nanoparticles. We present here a strategy for the synthesis of well-defined metal-metal oxide interfaces, i.e., incorporating Cu nanoparticles into the pores of metal organic frameworks (UiO-66). As a result, a sizeable proportion of Cu atoms are located at the interface with the Zr6O4(OH)4 nodes optimizing the proportion of the Cu-ZrO2 interface, which is highly active for the selective conversion of CO2 to methanol. This novel system highlights the advantages of combining the architecture and chemical features of MOF with small metal entities for CO2 and H2 activation.
