Iron oxide nanoparticles have been suggested for numerous applications in the central nervous system (CNS) such as targeting amyloid beta (Aβ) or for the use of advanced magnetic resonance imaging. More recently it was shown that iron nanoparticles (ferritins) form in vivo in regions of elevated oxidative stress and pointed to the role of iron in neurodegenerative diseases. In this presentation it will be demonstrated using high resolution analytical STEM and EELS that catalytically active iron interacts with neurons causing demyelination. The catalytic effects of iron oxide nanoparticles are not yet understood and this work will provide insights into the role of iron and whether iron has detrimental or protective outcomes for the brain.
