The methanol to olefins (MTO) process allows the efficient generation of light olefins, which are considered platform molecules for the petrochemical industry. Small pore zeolites containing large cavities have been extensively recognized as active and highly stable catalysts for the MTO process. Considering that the acid-mediated MTO reaction mechanism preferentially works through the permanent formation of bulky aromatic intermediate species within the small-pore zeolite cavities, so-called “hydrocarbon-pool” mechanism, the catalytic activity and selectivity of the MTO process could be maximized by controlling the size/shape of the zeolite cavity and/or the Al distribution along thems. Different syntheses approaches, both rationalizing the influence of the organic and inorganic structure directing agents, will be presented to control the final physico-chemical properties of several target small pore zeolites, together with their catalytic behaviour on MTO.  <br/>
