High-nuclearity transition metal nitride molecules are of interest because of their novel structures and potential magnetic and electronic properties. These nitride molecules with metals in mid- to high-valent oxidation states are quite rare in comparison to similar metal-oxygen and metal-chalcogen species. In our search for synthetic routes to such molecules, we have discovered adducts with the formula [Cl3M●N(SnMe3)3]1−, where M is a divalent transition metal. The synthesis and structure of different salts of these adducts with several transition metals will be presented. The spectral and magnetic characterization of the adducts and attempts to use them to construct high-nuclearity molecules will be discussed.
