The increase in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) calls for alternative manure management options with minimal environmental impacts. Alternative to direct manure application to soil, thermochemical conversion technologies can be used to produce renewable energy, destroy pathogens, and produce value-added biochar/hydrochar. This presentation will introduce dry and wet pyrolysis of animal manures and potential applications of their byproducts (biochar/hydrochar). Recent and on-going research results on soil, energy, and environmental applications of these byproducts will be presented along with research needed the future.
