The synthesis of stoichiometric LiMn2O4 (LMO) that has no cationic or anionic defects is known to be very difficult. Hence, most of synthesis routes tend to yield nonstoichiometric LMO, whose composition variation has a profound effect on the electrochemical properties of LMO. The influence of nonstoichiometry of LMO has been focused primarily on capacity fading, but little has been known about its impact on Li ion diffusivity that is one of the important physical properties dictating the LIB performance. Only a recent computation study proposed that the presence of excess Li could be greatly beneficial for enhancing Li diffusion in LMO lattice. Motivated by this new insight, we devised a facile synthesis route to Li-excess LMO (L-LMO) that is troublesome in the conventional ceramic method and proved the theoretical prediction (significantly ehhanced Li-ion diffusion) using in situ EIS analysis.
