Nylon 6,6 grafted reduced graphene-carbon nanotube hybrids (PA66-g-G-CNT) were fabricated and exploited as effective fillers for nylon 6,6 (PA66) composites. The reduced graphene-carbon nanotube hybrids (RG-CNTs) were fabricated by reacting multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) via the Hummers’ method, and then annealing in a furnace with a desired temperature. The resulting RG-CNTs were functionalized with interfacial agents containing acyl chloride groups, followed by melt mixing RG-CNTs with PA66 with an expectation of reaction between acyl chloride groups in the RG-CNTs and amine groups in the PA66. As a result, PA66 composites containing PA66-g-G-CNTs were fabricated. The formation of PA66-g-G-CNTs was confirmed by FE-SEM, TGA and XPS analyses. The PA66/PA66-g-G-CNT exhibited higher interfacial adhesion energy than PA66/MWCNT and PA66/RG-CNT composites, resulting in improved filler dispersion in the PA66/PA66-g-G-CNT composites. For a fixed filler content, PA66/PA66-g-G-CNT composite showed the highest tensile properties and fatigue life among the composites examined.
