The formation of C-C bonds is an important step in the conversion of low molecular weight compounds (e.g., aldehydes and ketones) derived from biomass to produce higher molecular weight hydrocarbons suitable for use as jet and diesel fuel. Our studies have shown that isolated metal hydroxo and metal oxo sites are highly effective in catalyzing the formation of C-C bonds via aldol condensation of aldehydes and ketones, derived by alcohol dehydration, and by the ketonization of carboxylic acids. The activity of such catalytic centers depends on cooperation between Lewis acidic metal cations and on Brønsted basic oxygen anions bonded to metallic center. We have also observed similar effects for Lewis Acid/Brønsted base pairs occurring at the surface of bulk metal oxides. What is also interesting is that there appears to be an optimum balance between Lewis acidity and Bronsted basicity for achieving the highest level of activity.<br/>
