Water plays an important role in many gas phase and heterogeneous reactions, often in surprising ways. One example is new particle formation and growth from methanesulfonic acid (MSA) reactions with ammonia and amines in air. MSA is a product of oxidation of organosulfur compounds largely emitted over oceans such as dimethylsulfide, and ammonia and amines have many sources which leads to their ubiquitous presence in many different types of environments. The effects of water in enhancing new particle formation and growth in the reactions of MSA with mixtures of ammonia and amines will be presented and the molecular level basis for these effects explored. A second system of interest involves heterogeneous and gas phase reactions of ozone with nitromethylene derivatives. A number of important solid nitromethylenes are in widespread use, including the neonicotinoid pesticide nitenpyram, as well as ranitidine and nizatidine found in some medications. Ozonolysis of the double bond is expected to generate Criegee intermediates which can react with water, altering kinetics and products. The results of some initial studies of these systems and the effects of water on them will be presented and used to probe the effects of water on such heterogeneous reactions.
