Over the past twenty five years, our attention has been focused on modeling the high-valent iron-oxo species generated by nonheme iron enzymes that catalyze the activation of dioxygen to effect substrate oxidation. Examples include the mononuclear oxoiron(IV) oxidants associated with a rapidly growing class of mononuclear nonheme iron oxidases and oxygenases, the oxoiron(V) species postulated for Rieske oxygenases, and the diiron(IV) oxidant called <b>Q</b>of soluble methane monooxygenase (sMMO). Our efforts have identified synthetic complexes that allow such high-valent species to be generated and characterized by X-ray crystallography or low-temperature spectroscopy. Of particular interest to us are the generation of a systematic series of complexes that can carry out H-atom transfer at rates that differ by at least a million-fold and the elucidation of what factors give rise to this range of reactivity.  <br/>
