With recent improvements and future implementations of powerful continuous and pulsed neutron sources, brilliant neutron beams enabling spatially and temporal resolved in-situ investigations of polymeric and biological materials will become available. We outline the future development of reactor, spallation and compact accelerator sources within the next two decades. Pulsed neutron beams at spallation sources will enable time-resolved in-situ investigations of nanoscale structural evolution on the millisecond scale. Spatially resolved investigations of biological materials like thin brain sections to image the neuronal fiber connectome will become possible. Quasi-elastic neutron scattering will reach timescales up to a microsecond, which will allow detailed investigation of polymer and protein dynamics on time-scales compatible with current MD-simulations, and will bridge to the time-scale to time-resolved light-scattering experiments. Together with the unique possibility to selectively contrast structural regions of interest by deuteration, in-depth insights into fundamental questions of polymer structure and dynamics in complex systems will become possible.
