We prepared several aminophosphine derivatives whose substituents adjust the kinetics of their conversion to InP nanocrystals by more than an order of magnitude. Kinetics measurements performed with UV-Visible absorption spectroscopy and <sup>31</sup>P nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy show that the number of nanocrystals steadily increases over the course of the reaction. At low temperatures the final size only weakly correlates with the conversion reactivity, while at higher temperatures size can be controlled by precursor conversion. We propose a model where the kinetics of growth are sensitive to nanocrystal size and temperature, thereby allowing narrow size distributions despite the continuous nucleation of new nanocrystals throughout the reaction.
