Fluorenofluorenes belong to a class of formally antiaromatic diradaloid compounds that continue to receive significant attention as materials for organic devices. We recently reported the synthesis of fluoreno[1,2-a]fluorenedione (FFD), a twisted, conjugated π-system. In the present study, the utility of FFD as a synthetic precursor to extended polycyclic hydrocarbons is explored. Syntheses, structure, and electronic and electrochemical properties of these new fluorenofluorene-based structures will be reported.
