Plasmons now find application in an amazingly diverse set of chemical and physical processes.  While new plasmonic materials are emerging, this talk focuses on visible plasmon resonances supported by nanostructured gold and silver.  On one end of the spectrum plasmons provide a vehicle to amplify the spectroscopic signatures of molecule, leading to a wide range of sensor applications.  Here I will highlight several recent results from our group and introduce a new nanoparticle functionalization platform based on N-heterocyclic carbenes.  Alternatively, the extreme light-harvesting abilities of plasmonic structures are of interest for energy-capture.  Towards this end, I will discuss fundamental studies of plasmon-environment coupling schemes as revealed by nanometer and meV resolved STEM/EELS measurements.  I will conclude with a brief discussion of infrared plasmonic materials and their coupling to molecular vibrations.
