Understanding the emissions and chemistry of cities remains one of the central questions of atmospheric science. The composition of air in ciites is widely recognized to contribute to poor health outcomes. Yet, the detailed spatial patterns of exposure and their relationship to health remain elusive. At the same time, emissions of greenhouse gases in (and by) cities increasingly dominate the global burden of emissions. In this talk I will describe new approaches to low cost sensor networks that provide a path forward to neighborhood scale emissions and exposure maps. These maps will be usueful for verification of plans and policies aimed at emission reduction and will allow a new generation of epidemiological studies capable of much clearer connections and associations between exposure to specific pollutnats and health outcomes.
