Our group has had a significant interest in coordination of palladium and platinum metal centers to a variety of organic ligands. Our recent interest is in the synthesis of ligands via Aldol-like reactions of aromatic aldehydes and ketones for the creation of new ligand systems. The 4’-phenyl-2,3’:6’2”-terpyridine (1) moiety has been intensively characterized for its ability to coordinate to a range of metal centers. The synthetic mechanism of 1 occurs in two independent steps. The reaction undergoes an Aldol-like reaction with two equivalents of the aromatic ketone and one equivalent of the aldehyde under basic conditions, affording an “open” intermediate to the terpy system. When ammonium is introduced into the system, the imine-assisted ring closure forms the terpy system. Our research group has begun studying the electronic and steric effects of the substituents on the aromatic ring to further understand the mechanistic pathway in producing these terpyridine complexes. Substituted derivatives of the intermediate system, 3-phenyl-1,5-di(2-pyridinyl)-1,5-pentadione, have been less well investigated. Studies into the metal coordination on this new ligand platform are underway.
