Water is the solvent in which chemical reactions in atmospheric aerosols and cloud droplets take place.  Laboratory studies showed that: (1) the variations in temperature and relative humidity affect the amount of aerosols liquid water (ALW), and hence the relative importance of surface versus bulk reactions, (2) adsorbed water can catalyze or inhibit certain reactions such as the hydrolysis of acids and ozonolysis of unsaturated organics, respectively, and (3) the structure of adsorbed water can be liquid- or ice-like depending on the surface properties of the solid phase. All of the above modify the efficiency of aerosols in acting as cloud and ice nuclei, and hence their overall contribution to the indirect effects on the climate.  In this talk, results will be presented on (a) efficient new organic and organometallic polymeric particle formation from aqueous phase iron-catalyzed reactions with aromatic and aliphatic dicarboxylic acid compounds , and (b) structure of surface water and hygroscopic properties of these polymeric particles at room temperature as a function of relative humidity.  The significance of these results will be presented in relation to the aging of iron-containing dust in the presence of organics and how it changes dust optical and hygroscopic properties.
