A method of fabricating chicken feather proteins with ultrathin graphene oxide is presented for efficient water purification. The prepared chicken feathers/graphene oxide based adsorbent show strong interactions between keratin proteins of chicken feathers and graphene oxide sheets, as characterized by scanning electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. The performance data of the membrane show high retention organic dyes and heavy metal removal from water simultaneously. Because of the ultrathin nature of chicken feathers/graphene oxide membrane, indicating that this new generation chicken feathers/graphene oxide based nanofiltration technology would be resource saving and cost effective. The integration of high performance, low cost, and simple solution based fabrication process promises chicken feathers based membrane has great potential application in practical water purification.
