PPCPs degradation by AOPs has gained a major interest in the past decade. In this study, theophylline (TP) treatment was studied in a system of thermally activated persulfate (TAP) and chemically activated persulfate (CAP), where the two persulfate activation methods were studied separately and combined (TCAP). Results showed that at t = 60 min, [TP]0 = 10 mg L-1 and [PS]0 = 5 mM (i) TAP system resulted in 60% TP degradation at T = 60°C, (ii) CAP system showed less effectivity at room temperature, while (iii) TCAP resulted in complete TP degradation for [PS]0 = [Fe]0 = 2 mM at T = 60°C. TCAP system was tested for the effects of [PS]0, [PS]0:[Fe2+]0 ratio, and temperature. The results demonstrated that at 1:1 [PS]0:[Fe2+]0 ratio TP degradation was improved, and TP degradation rate increased with increasing the reaction temperature and [PS]0. Several water matrices were tested, and the system was applied to a real highly charged pharmaceutical effluent. Chlorides caused inhibition of the degradation process while nitrates had minimal effect. TP dissolved in spring, sea and waste water media showed lower degradation rate than in DI water medium. A real pharmaceutical effluent solution showed effective TP degradation in TCAP system proving applicability of the studied system to waste water treatment.
