Recent advances in high-resolution tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS) have demonstrated its potential to rival with state-of-the-art structural characterization techniques. The mode speficity of the TERS image patterns provides extra chemical and structural information to the sample molecule compared with traditional microscopies. The new selection rule and the spatial resolution of TERS are attributed to the highly confined near field induced by the plasmon of atomically sharp tips. However, a simple and intuitive mechanism explaining the localized interactions between the molecule and the near field remains elusive. To address this problem, we have recently proposed a model termed locally integrated Raman polarizability density (LIRPD). In this talk, I will demonstrate the theoretical insights provided by the LIRPD approach and how it helps to determine the structure of the molecule measured in TERS images.
