Ultraviolet-driven advanced oxidation processes (UV/AOP) are an integral step in the potable reuse treatment train. Hydrogen peroxide, persulfate, chloramine and chlorine are candidate photo-oxidants. They assist the degradation of trace organic contaminants during UV/AOP for potable reuse. To choose the optimal photo-oxidant, treatment efficiency on contaminant degradation needs to be considered, including reaction kinetics and stoichiometry efficiency. In addition, toxicological responses of transformation products are traditionally neglected and need to be quantified. This presentation will discuss the integration of both treatment efficiency and toxicity consideration into the decision making of UV/AOP design for potable reuse. We will share the most recent results on toxicity responses of emerging UV/AOP to remove trace organic contaminants from recycled water.
