As it has become increasingly difficult to produce drugs for new and challenging biological targets, the pharmaceutical industry has seen an explosive growth in new chemical entities (i.e modalities) that have the potential to drugs against these targets. These entities range from traditional small molecules to biologically-based large molecules and even cells. Developing formulations and translating them into the clinic has become an auxiliary challenge associated with these new chemical entities. In this talk, I will give an overview of technical issues encountered during the formulation development and manufacture of a "medium-sized" molecule intended for the treatment of macular degeneration.
