At Bayer AG, Crop Science Division, we have developed the first synthesis of a unique herbicidal natural product which has often been cited in agrochemical literature but no synthesis was available thus far. The structure is not related to any known herbicide or to a known mode of action. Our synthesis is based on a new type of chemoselective nitrone-aldol reaction developed in a successful research collaboration. Details on the chemical procedure, structure-activity relationship and elucidation of stereochemistry will be presented.
