In the past decade, metallaphotoredox catalysis has emerged as a valuable platform for accessing new synthetic methodologies, based on its ability to generate reactive radical species under mild conditions. One paradigm enabled by metallaphotoredox catalysis is the facile formation of radical intermediates through halogen atom abstraction from alkyl or aryl halides, mediated by silyl radicals. The unique mechanistic features of the merger of halogen atom abstraction and metallaphotoredox catalysis has led to the development of two new manifolds that give access to previously elusive transformations: copper-catalyzed trifluoromethylation of bromoarenes and a general nickel-catalyzed cross-electrophile coupling platform.
