Aquaporins (AQPs) are naturally occurring water channels known for facilitating water transport and excluding ion. Artificial imidazole-quartet water channels with 2.6 Å pores, similar to AQP channels, forming oriented dipolar water wire arrays inside the tubular I-quartet architectures. As the scaffolds of these channels, continuous and iterative H bonds between each ureido play a vital role in the stabilization. Herein, we employ the compounds with multiple ureido hydroxyl as the functional polar heads, which also can be self-assembled into transmembrane water channels showing relative high water permeabilities. Beyond our expectation, the scaffolds of channels based on the compounds with bis or tris hydroxy groups, differ greatly with I-quartet channels, are formed by H bonds between intermolecular neighboring ureido and one of the hydroxyls. These structural behaviors bring forward promising architectures for artificial water channels.
