Energy and water technologies are strongly related in terms of requirement for the types of active materials, although they are for different functions. We have been exploring a group of active materials for both energy and water technologies, by engineering of MOFs (Metal Organic Frameworks)-based and MOF-derived Materials. In particular, there are several transition metal nitrides and carbonitrides in 2D morphology forms derived from MOFs, which are shown to be among the best performing materials for energy storage and conversion. They are of 2D non-layered and 2D holey morphologies, and their compositions and heterojunctions can be tuned systematically, as they are grown of MOFs and MOF-derived. We have conducted a series of in-situ and operando studies, in order to understand their formations as derived from various precursors, and their performance when used as electrodes and active elements in membranes. These studies enable an understanding over varying length scales from atomic scale (single atoms) up to bulk structures, and are critically important for tracing their outstanding behavior as the efficient cathodes in metal-air batteries, such as Li-air and Zn-air, as well as in Zn ion batteries. In parallel, these 2D morphology active materials are shown among the efficient active top layers for flux and anti-fouling in the multilayer ceramic membrane structures. In this talk, we will present the latest development and understanding of these 2D active materials conducted in our labs.
